Location: Chikkamagaluru
Project Type: Farmhouse
Date of Completion: 2025

Set within lush coffee plantations, this 3,500 sq ft residence is conceived as a peaceful, climate-responsive retreat for a family of three, with space to host visiting relatives. Guided by tropical modernist principles, the design thoughtfully responds to its natural and cultural context while following a simple, vastu-aligned planning approach.
The house is oriented to the northeast and organised through a clear, efficient layout based on proportional systems. A long, shaded veranda forms a key architectural element, creating a gentle transition from the landscape into the home. Along with the vehicular porch, it allows a gradual movement through semi-open spaces before reaching the entrance. A small outdoor seating area provides a brief pause before stepping inside.
A modest foyer leads into the living room and a combined family–dining space designed for everyday interaction. Two bedrooms on the ground floor serve daily functional needs, while an additional bedroom upstairs offers greater privacy.
Large windows are strategically positioned to frame views of the surrounding plantations and working landscape, ensuring a constant visual connection to nature. Interior walls are kept minimal to enhance openness, and where separation is necessary, wooden slat partitions subtly define spaces while allowing light and air to flow freely.
A continuous sloping shingle roof protects the home from heavy rainfall and tropical weather, while creating dramatic interior volumes without increasing built area.
Natural materials ground the home in its setting. Teak wood is used extensively for custom doors, windows, and furniture, complemented by durable Kota stone flooring. Overall, the design emphasises comfort, simplicity, and a strong indoor–outdoor relationship.
