Location: Bengaluru
Project Type: Independent House
Date of Completion: 2024
Photographer: Shamanth Patil

Located on a compact 30' x 50' east-facing site, this family home overlooks a serene neighbourhood park and embraces a towering Spathodea tree at its entrance. Designed for a family of four, the house draws inspiration from Bangalore’s legacy as a Garden City—an identity rapidly fading amidst the chaos of urban expansion. The design reinterprets this nostalgia by creating a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, offering a sanctuary rooted in tranquillity.

The architecture prioritizes openness and transparency, achieved through expansive sliding doors and full-length windows that dissolve boundaries between the built environment and its verdant surroundings. Balconies brimming with plants and a façade punctuated by wooden screens create a sense of enclosure while maintaining visual lightness. The screens also allow sunlight to cast dynamic patterns across the interiors, ensuring privacy without disconnecting from nature. Skylights strategically placed throughout the house bring in diffused daylight, enriching the spatial experience.

A restrained material palette underpins the home’s design ethos. Neutral tones dominate, with wood, stone, and marble lending a tactile depth. Rounded edges on texture-painted walls soften the spatial geometry, while subtle details—grooves in plaster, fluted risers on the staircase, and niches carved into walls—introduce layers of refinement.

The massing of the house achieves lightness with cantilevered balconies that seem to hover above the site. This sense of weightlessness is further enhanced by the reflection of daylight on white walls, creating an airy, expansive atmosphere despite the compact dimensions.

At the home’s core, a winding metal staircase becomes a focal point, injecting a sense of movement and playful elegance into the common areas. This sculptural element ties the two floors together while acting as an anchor for the open-plan design.

The house does not just embrace its environment; it becomes a part of it. Every view frames a natural backdrop, turning everyday moments—whether lounging in the living room or walking up the stairs—into an experience of calm and connection, re-establishing the spirit of Bangalore’s Garden City past.
